National News – Authorities in Oyo State have confirmed a case of Lassa fever involving a 44-year-old woman treated at University College Hospital in Ibadan.

The patient died on April 11, 2026, while laboratory confirmation of the infection was received on April 13, prompting swift public health action.

The Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, disclosed that the state government activated its emergency response system immediately after confirmation.

The Incident Management System has been placed on high alert to coordinate containment measures, including contact tracing and monitoring of individuals who may have been exposed.

Authorities also ensured a safe and dignified burial for the deceased to limit further risk.

According to officials, Lassa fever spreads mainly through contact with food or surfaces contaminated by infected rodents, but can also be transmitted via bodily fluids in healthcare settings lacking proper infection control.

The government stressed that early detection and prompt medical care significantly improve survival outcomes.

Residents have been urged to report symptoms such as persistent fever, fatigue, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, unexplained bleeding, chest pain, or breathing difficulties.

Health authorities advised maintaining hygiene by storing food in rodent-proof containers, disposing of waste properly, sealing entry points in homes, and practising regular handwashing.

Surveillance has been intensified across health facilities, and medical personnel have been directed to strictly follow infection prevention protocols.

Emergency contact lines have also been made available to support rapid response efforts.

Officials reassured the public that the situation is under control and emphasized that preventive measures remain the most effective defense against the disease.
