National News – Leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party are moving toward reconciliation as representatives from camps loyal to Nyesom Wike and several PDP governors prepare to meet on Monday to address the party’s lingering leadership crisis.
The talks are expected to focus on harmonising key demands from both sides and restoring stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources within the party confirmed that a joint reconciliation committee comprising representatives and legal advisers from both factions has already begun preliminary discussions.
Each side reportedly nominated about six members to examine contentious issues and recommend practical solutions that could reunite the party structure.
The internal dispute intensified after the November 15 Ibadan convention that produced a National Working Committee led by Tanimu Turaki.
The convention was later challenged by a faction aligned with Wike, which subsequently announced a caretaker leadership structure.
Rival meetings by both groups at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja led to clashes, forcing authorities to shut down the complex.
Legal battles further complicated the situation when both camps sought recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
However, the electoral body declined to acknowledge either leadership group.
The dispute reached the Court of Appeal, which recently nullified the Ibadan convention, ruling that it violated the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
Following the ruling, party elders and stakeholders pushed for reconciliation to prevent deeper divisions that could weaken the PDP before the next election cycle.
Members of the party’s Board of Trustees believe that dialogue is necessary to rebuild confidence among members and protect the party’s chances in future contests.
Despite the reconciliation effort, some leaders in Wike’s camp insist that preparations for a planned national convention will continue.
Others within the governors’ bloc are advocating the creation of an interim caretaker committee to oversee party affairs temporarily.
Political observers say the outcome of Monday’s meeting could determine whether the PDP moves toward unity or faces prolonged internal conflict as the 2027 elections approach.
