National News – Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has been cleared to contest in the presidential primary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general election.

The clearance was announced on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, after a screening exercise held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The development marks a major step in the build-up to Nigeria’s next presidential race as opposition parties intensify preparations and coalition talks.

The Chairman of the NDC National Screening Committee, Sam Egwu, confirmed that Obi met all constitutional and legal requirements to participate in the party’s presidential primary.

According to Egwu, the committee carefully reviewed Obi’s credentials, including compliance with the Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

Speaking after the screening, Obi revealed that the exercise lasted more than two and a half hours.

He explained that members of the committee examined his academic certificates, NYSC documents, age declaration, and questioned him about his plans for Nigeria if elected president in 2027.

Obi stated that he was satisfied with the transparent nature of the screening process and commended the committee for its professionalism.

The former Anambra State governor also said the screening provided an opportunity for him to share his vision for national development, economic growth, security improvement, and responsible leadership.

He noted that Nigeria urgently needs a leadership style focused on accountability and rebuilding public trust.

Political observers believe Obi’s clearance could reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, especially as consultations among political parties continue across the country.

The NDC is expected to announce the official date for its presidential primary in the coming weeks.
