National News – The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed five inspectors attached to its Department of Operations following allegations of armed robbery, kidnapping, extortion and conspiracy across Rivers State, Nigeria.

The dismissed officers were identified as John Okoi, Eyibo Asuquo, Udo Ndipmong, Bright Nwachukwu and Anele Ikechukwu.

According to police authorities, the misconduct occurred between September 2025 and January 2026 and came to light after petitions were submitted by the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation on behalf of victims.

Investigations revealed that the officers allegedly operated in minibuses, mounted illegal stop-and-search operations and intercepted unsuspecting members of the public at gunpoint.

Victims were reportedly forced to disclose bank details and passcodes, after which funds were transferred from their accounts.

One victim was abducted along Aba Road and allegedly dispossessed of over N3.6 million and $4,000 from a cryptocurrency wallet, while another lost over N7.3 million in cash and valuables.

A third victim reportedly lost N1.5 million along NTA Road.

The police spokesperson stated that an orderly room proceeding found the officers culpable, leading to their immediate dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.

He added that a prima facie case of conspiracy, kidnapping, official corruption and armed robbery had been established and the case file forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for possible charges within 30 days.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability and protection of citizens’ rights in Rivers State.

The police authorities said the action demonstrates internal disciplinary measures aimed at restoring public trust and deterring misconduct within the force.

They urged residents of Rivers State to report suspicious activities and assured that complaints would be promptly investigated.

Security analysts noted that the case highlights ongoing concerns about abuse of power by some officers and the need for stronger oversight mechanisms.

The command emphasized that collaboration with human rights groups and community petitions played a key role in uncovering the alleged crimes.

It further assured that prosecution will proceed once legal advice is received from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
