National News – Former England captain Wayne Rooney has criticised England manager Thomas Tuchel for leaving Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the country’s squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Rooney described the decision as “mind-boggling” as debates continue over England’s defensive options before the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Alexander-Arnold, who recently returned to regular action for Real Madrid after recovering from a thigh injury, has missed England’s last four squad selections under Tuchel.

Rooney questioned why Ben White was preferred ahead of the former Liverpool FC vice-captain despite his proven experience and creativity.

Speaking on his podcast on Thursday, Rooney praised White’s quality but insisted Alexander-Arnold remains one of England’s best footballers.

He argued that the squad should include players capable of influencing major matches at the World Cup.

England’s current defensive list includes Tino Livramento, Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa.

Rooney, however, maintained that Reece James would still be his first-choice right-back when fully fit, despite concerns over consistency and injuries.

Former England defender Phil Jagielka also backed Alexander-Arnold for a World Cup place, saying the national team must rely on its most talented players.

He added that the defender’s performances over the years prove he deserves a seat on the plane.

Rooney further stressed that England need defensive balance rather than overly attacking full-backs, insisting solid defending will allow creative players to decide matches during the World Cup campaign.
