National News – Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has withdrawn from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial race in Sokoto State and handed the African Democratic Congress ticket to former Commissioner for Finance, Faruk Malami-Yabo.

The decision, announced on Friday, May 15, 2026, follows internal consultations and disagreements within the party over candidate selection.

According to the Sokoto State Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Lamir Aminu, the move was aimed at preserving unity, strengthening internal democracy, and ensuring stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tambuwal, a key ADC leader in Sokoto, said the decision reflects the party’s ideology of promoting younger politicians, as the ticket was transferred to Faruk Malami-Yabo after consultations among stakeholders.

The withdrawal affects the Sokoto South senatorial contest for the 2027 elections scheduled for February 20, 2027, as the ADC intensifies preparations in the state.

The party also confirmed that several House of Representatives tickets have been allocated to younger aspirants, signalling a broader strategy of youth inclusion.

Supporters described the development as part of ongoing political realignments in Sokoto State, with ADC leaders urging unity and grassroots mobilisation to strengthen their chances in the forthcoming elections.

Political observers in Sokoto State say the development underscores growing internal restructuring within opposition parties as they position for the 2027 elections.

They note that Tambuwal’s influence within the ADC remains significant, especially given his experience as a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and governor of Sokoto State.

Analysts further argue that the decision to promote younger candidates may help the party broaden its appeal among first-time voters and rural communities, particularly in Sokoto North and Sokoto South constituencies.

Party stakeholders have urged calm and continued engagement among members, stressing that the transition of the ticket is part of broader efforts to strengthen internal cohesion and improve electoral competitiveness across Sokoto State ahead of the polls.
