National News – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed retired Major General Adeyinka Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, marking the first time such a position has been created in Nigeria.

The appointment was announced on Monday through a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Dr Ibrahim Kana.

The Presidency said the appointment was aimed at improving internal security coordination, intelligence sharing, and inter-agency cooperation as Nigeria continues to battle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across different regions of the country.

Fadewa, a retired senior military officer with more than 30 years of experience in intelligence and security operations, previously served as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser between 2015 and 2021.

During that period, he reportedly played a major role in establishing the Intelligence Fusion Centre at the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The centre was designed to strengthen collaboration among key security agencies, including the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces, to improve threat assessment and emergency response coordination nationwide.

Following his retirement from military service, Fadewa worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, contributing to policy discussions on national security reforms, policing, and civil-security relations.

He is also recognised for authoring a monograph on policing and national security in Nigeria.

According to the Presidency, Tinubu expressed confidence that Fadewa’s experience and strategic expertise would support the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and help strengthen proactive security management in the country.

The creation of the homeland security adviser role comes amid renewed calls for stronger intelligence coordination and more effective responses to rising insecurity in Nigeria.
