National News – Bola Tinubu has praised Team Nigeria for securing a historic 15th continental title at the African Wrestling Championships held in Alexandria, Egypt, on Sunday, May 3, 2026.

The President, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, commended the wrestlers for their discipline, consistency, and outstanding performance, which reinforced Nigeria’s dominance in African wrestling.

According to the official statement, Nigeria delivered an impressive medal haul, winning 9 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals overall.

The women’s team led the charge with 8 gold and 2 silver medals across 10 events, highlighting the country’s strength and depth in the sport.

Tinubu noted that this success was not accidental but the result of structured planning, effective talent development, and sustained investment in the nation’s sports ecosystem.

The President specifically applauded standout athletes including Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu, and Mercy Adekuoroye for their composure and technical excellence.

He also recognized Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo for his victory in the men’s freestyle category, alongside contributions from other team members who ensured collective success.

Tinubu further praised the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, led by Bashir Adeniyi, for maintaining Nigeria’s leadership position in African wrestling.

He emphasized that the achievement reflects a growing pipeline of athletes being groomed for global competitions, including future international championships.

Highlighting why the victory matters, the President stated that it demonstrates how focus, preparation, and teamwork can elevate national pride.

He urged the athletes to remain disciplined and continue representing Nigeria with excellence on the global stage.
