National News – President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed plans to reposition the Nigeria Police Force through enhanced education and training, according to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja during a meeting with senior police officials led by the Inspector-General, Tunji Disu, Alausa said the initiative aims to improve professionalism, strengthen security delivery, and modernise policing nationwide.

The minister explained that discussions focused on establishing a southern campus of the Police Academy in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The proposed institution is expected to begin admitting students between September and November 2026, pending expedited verification by the National Universities Commission.

This move, he said, aligns with Tinubu’s broader security reform agenda.

Alausa also revealed that over 42 police colleges across Nigeria will be converted into monotechnics to boost technical and professional training.

The transition has received a presidential waiver, allowing authorities to fast-track implementation.

Additionally, plans are underway to accredit five to six of the new institutions to offer industry-relevant courses designed to enhance operational capacity within the police force.

To ensure smooth execution, three committees have been established.

These include a resource verification team led by the NUC, a capacity development committee involving the National Board for Technical Education and senior police officers, and an infrastructure committee for the new academy campus chaired by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

Officials say education is central to addressing systemic challenges in policing, including skill gaps and evolving security threats.

Disu emphasised that the police leadership is committed to introducing modern courses that will better equip personnel and strengthen national security outcomes.
