National News – Donald Trump has openly criticised Pope Leo XIV, saying he is “not a big fan” after the pontiff issued a strong anti-war message.
The remarks were made on Sunday at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where Trump accused the Pope of being too liberal and weak on global security concerns, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The controversy began on Saturday when Pope Leo XIV, speaking at St. Peter’s Basilica, urged world leaders to end violence and prioritise peace.
He condemned war, excessive displays of power, and materialism, calling for renewed diplomacy.
In response, Trump reiterated his stance on social media, stating he does not support any religious leader who appears tolerant of nuclear threats from countries like Iran.
Tensions between Washington and the Vatican have been building in recent months, particularly over US immigration policies and military actions in the Middle East.
The Pope had earlier described mass deportation policies as “inhuman” and criticised aggressive rhetoric, including Trump’s alleged threats against Iran, which he called “unacceptable.”
Despite reports of a deeper diplomatic rift, both sides have denied any official breakdown in relations.
A recent claim that a US defence official reprimanded a Vatican envoy was dismissed by both the Pentagon and the Vatican as inaccurate.
The disagreement highlights broader global debates about the balance between military strength and diplomacy, especially amid stalled peace talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad.
While Pope Leo XIV continues to advocate for dialogue and ceasefire agreements, Trump maintains a hardline stance on national security and nuclear threats.
