The United Kingdom has announced a series of airspace and road restrictions in Windsor as part of security preparations for the upcoming state visit of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu next week. The measures are aimed at safeguarding dignitaries, spectators, and the public during the high-profile visit.
Thames Valley Police confirmed that the security operation is being coordinated with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and other key partners. Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall described the measures as “comprehensive” and essential for ensuring a smooth event.
“The air restrictions are only one aspect of our robust security operation,” Hall said on Wednesday. “We have extensive experience policing Royal events, and significant planning has gone into this visit to guarantee safety for all attendees.”
Windsor Castle already maintains permanent airspace restrictions year-round. However, on Wednesday, March 18, these restrictions will be extended from 7:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. to provide enhanced protection during President Tinubu’s visit.
Any violations of the airspace restrictions will be treated as criminal offences under the Air Navigation Order. Police have vowed strict enforcement, warning that offenders could face arrest and prosecution.
In addition to airspace measures, the security operation will include the deployment of specialist police units, such as search teams, armed officers, the Mounted Section, and Roads Policing. Officers from Project Servator and neighbourhood teams will also engage with the public to maintain safety.
Authorities will leverage Windsor’s extensive CCTV network and deploy hostile vehicle mitigation barriers along key routes. “These protective measures are designed to ensure the event runs safely and smoothly,” Hall said, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation.
Police are urging members of the public to report any suspicious activity. Citizens are encouraged to call 101 for non-emergencies and 999 in case of immediate threats. “The public plays a critical role in helping us maintain security,” Hall added.
The state visit has generated significant interest among Nigerians living in the UK, who are mobilizing support ahead of the event. Security officials have assured that all efforts will be made to balance public access with necessary protective measures.
As President Tinubu prepares for the visit, authorities in Windsor are leaving no stone unturned to secure the historic engagement, which underscores the enduring ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
