National News – The United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to Nigerian-led solutions to development and humanitarian challenges following a high-level visit by Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed to Nigeria on Monday, April 14, 2026.

She visited Zamfara and Benue States, where she met displaced communities affected by insecurity and observed ongoing humanitarian response efforts by government authorities and partners.

The visit, aimed at assessing needs and strengthening cooperation, highlighted the scale of internal displacement driven by prolonged insurgency in the northeast and other regional conflicts.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Mohammed witnessed firsthand the humanitarian conditions and the challenges facing displaced persons.

The UN emphasized that digital tools, including the International Organization for Migration’s Displacement Tracking Matrix, are being used in Nigeria to track internally displaced persons, improve data accuracy, and enhance response coordination in over 90 countries.

However, the organisation warned that funding shortages, digital inequality, and data privacy risks continue to hinder effective implementation.

At the 59th Session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD59) in New York, the UN reiterated that declining global funding threatens sustainable development goals.

Secretary-General António Guterres called for stronger and more predictable financing to support vulnerable countries like Nigeria.

Nigeria currently hosts about two million internally displaced persons, making improved coordination essential for humanitarian planning and long-term recovery.

The UN stressed that collaboration with Nigerian authorities remains central to addressing insecurity, displacement, and development gaps, with emphasis on technology-driven solutions and inclusive planning.
