National News – The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), University of Ilorin branch, has formally petitioned President Bola Tinubu over persistent delays in the payment of salaries affecting non-teaching staff in federal universities across Nigeria.

The union, in an open letter, decried the hardship caused by the delays, noting that many workers were unable to meet basic family needs, especially during the Easter period.

It linked the situation to unresolved issues surrounding the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and long-standing labour disputes.

The development occurred in Ilorin, Kwara State, where SSANU officials raised concerns over what they described as recurring salary irregularities affecting workers’ welfare.

The petition was issued by SSANU Chairman Falowo Naheem on behalf of non-teaching staff, addressed to President Tinubu in April 2026, following resolutions from the 54th National Executive Council meeting held at Ekiti State University on March 26, 2026.

The union said the delays have worsened living conditions for workers nationwide, especially during festive periods when salaries are most needed.

It explained that the problem stems from unresolved renegotiations and government’s handling of IPPIS-related grievances.

SSANU warned that if the Federal Government fails to address outstanding salary arrears and conclude negotiations by April 30, 2026, it may embark on an indefinite strike in collaboration with NASU under the Joint Action Committee.

Workers described the situation as unbearable, urging government intervention to restore trust in the university system and prevent disruption of academic operations across federal institutions.

Stakeholders in the university system have expressed concern that continued salary delays could trigger widespread industrial action and disrupt academic calendars nationwide.

SSANU also emphasized that while industrial action is not its preferred option, continued neglect of staff welfare leaves the union with limited alternatives.

It urged the Presidency to prioritize timely salary payments, clear arrears, and ensure sustainable funding mechanisms for university workers to maintain stability in the education sector. The union reiterated urgency.
