National News – Welsh Championship side Wrexham A.F.C. have celebrated goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo after he earned his first senior invitation to the Nigeria national football team squad ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup in London.
The club announced its congratulations on social media on Wednesday following the 24-year-old’s inclusion in coach Eric Chelle’s team list.
Okonkwo, born in London to Nigerian parents, previously represented England at youth level from Under-15 to Under-18 before switching allegiance to Nigeria after receiving FIFA clearance in April 2026.
Wrexham described the invitation as a major milestone in the goalkeeper’s growing professional career.
Nigeria will begin their Unity Cup campaign against Zimbabwe national football team at The Valley Stadium on May 26.
The tournament will also feature Jamaica national football team and India national football team, with the final and third-place matches scheduled for May 30.
The Super Eagles are also expected to face Poland national football team in Warsaw on June 3 and Portugal national football team in Leiria on June 10 as part of preparations for future international competitions.
Standing at 6ft 6in, Okonkwo joined Wrexham permanently in 2024 after leaving Arsenal F.C..
He became one of the club’s standout performers during the 2025/26 Championship season, making 39 league appearances and delivering several key saves.
The former Arsenal academy graduate earlier had loan spells with Crewe Alexandra and Austrian club Sturm Graz before moving to Wrexham after veteran goalkeeper Ben Foster retired.
His arrival in the Super Eagles squad is expected to strengthen competition for the number one position currently occupied by Stanley Nwabali and challenged by Maduka Okoye.
