National News – The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, to join the ruling party, emphasizing the importance of his leadership for Nigeria’s development.
The appeal was made during Yilwatda’s visit to Shekarau’s residence in Kano on Wednesday, aimed at both showing respect and strengthening APC ahead of upcoming elections.
Yilwatda described Shekarau as a principled and influential politician whose experience could significantly contribute to national progress.
He stressed that Northern Nigeria faces a crucial period where unity among key political actors is necessary for stability and development.
Highlighting federal projects, Yilwatda cited the gas pipeline and the Lagos–Kano–Maradi rail line, which he said would boost economic growth, particularly in Kano, a major commercial hub in sub-Saharan Africa.
He also reiterated the need for fairness in power rotation, noting that after the North’s tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari, the South should complete its term under President Bola Tinubu.
Responding, Shekarau revealed he may soon leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal crises.
He said consultations regarding his political future were ongoing, with all options under consideration.
Shekarau stressed that his decisions would follow a “Kano First Agenda,” prioritizing initiatives that benefit the state.
He assured that his political ambitions remain secondary to Kano’s peace and development, emphasizing that he would avoid any action that could trigger instability.
This move signals potential realignments ahead of future elections, with APC actively courting influential Northern leaders.
Shekarau’s decision could significantly impact Kano’s political landscape and the broader strategic positioning of major parties ahead of the 2027 polls.
