National News – The Tunji Disu has ordered an immediate nationwide audit of police arms and ammunition following a controversial killing in Delta State.

The directive, announced on Tuesday in Abuja, comes after a viral video showed officers fatally shooting a restrained, handcuffed suspect at close range.

The Inspector General described the act as unlawful, raising urgent concerns about accountability, professionalism, and misuse of operational weapons within the Nigeria Police Force.

The audit, which affects all state commands, mandates Commissioners of Police to conduct a transparent and comprehensive inventory of firearms and ammunition.

According to Disu, the goal is to identify gaps, improve operational readiness, and prevent abuse of weapons.

Detailed reports are to be submitted to Force Headquarters within a specified timeframe, reinforcing tighter internal control measures nationwide.

In response to the Delta incident, four officers led by ASP Nuhu Usman were dismissed, and their case has been forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for possible criminal charges.

Disu stressed that justice will be pursued fully, noting that the killing violated both human rights standards and police rules of engagement.

The development highlights ongoing concerns about extrajudicial actions and the need for reforms in Nigeria’s policing system.

To strengthen community policing, the IG also directed Commissioners to hold regular town hall meetings with stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth groups.

He emphasized accessibility, urging police leaders to make their contact details available to communities to improve trust and intelligence sharing.

Citizens were encouraged to report suspicious activities, reinforcing a “see something, say something” approach to public safety.

Additionally, the police announced the creation of a new Violent Crime Response Unit to replace the disbanded Special Weapons and Tactics teams.

The new unit will focus on intelligence-driven operations, human rights compliance, and strict oversight mechanisms to ensure accountability in tackling violent crimes across Nigeria.
