National News – Indonesia volcano eruption has killed three hikers after Mount Dukono in North Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia erupted violently on Friday, sending ash 10 kilometres into the sky.
The incident involved twenty hikers, including nine Singaporeans and several Indonesian trekkers, who were on the slopes when the sudden eruption occurred.
Authorities confirmed that the disaster happened on Friday, May 8, 2026, when the active volcano erupted while tourists were hiking in a restricted zone.
According to officials, two of the victims were Singaporean nationals while the third was a local guide.
Emergency responders said seventeen hikers, including seven foreigners, were rescued alive after the eruption, while rescue operations were temporarily suspended due to ongoing volcanic activity and unsafe conditions.
Local authorities explained that the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation had previously warned against approaching within four kilometres of the crater due to heightened seismic activity.
However, reports suggest some tourists ignored safety warnings in pursuit of social media content.
The eruption produced a thick ash column and booming sound, forcing evacuation delays and posing health risks from ash inhalation.
Rescue teams, including police and disaster management agencies, are monitoring conditions before continuing recovery efforts for the remaining victims.
Officials warned hikers to avoid the mountain as it remains on alert level two, with continued volcanic rumbling expected.
Indonesia, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, frequently experiences volcanic activity due to tectonic movements.
Authorities reiterated that Mount Dukono remains highly active and urged tourists, hikers, and content creators to strictly obey exclusion zones to prevent further casualties.
Geological agencies continue monitoring seismic signals and ash movement across North Maluku to protect nearby communities and air routes.
