National News – The Nasarawa State Government has inaugurated 12 sub-committees to coordinate preparations for the 76th Regular National Council on Health meeting scheduled to hold in Lafia in November 2026.
The committees were unveiled on Friday by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Gaza Gwamna, who said the event would attract health experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The move is aimed at ensuring a successful and well-organised national health conference in Nasarawa State.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Lafia, Gwamna explained that the National Council on Health serves as Nigeria’s highest decision-making platform on healthcare policies and programmes.
He noted that the meeting reviews progress in the health sector, identifies pressing challenges, and develops strategies to improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
According to him, the state government decided to establish the committees months ahead of the event to guarantee effective planning and seamless coordination.
The commissioner stated that the committees would oversee key areas including logistics, accommodation, publicity, transportation, security, and medical services.
He added that Nasarawa State was determined to provide a conducive environment for productive discussions that would shape the future of healthcare in Nigeria.
Gwamna also praised Governor Abdullahi Sule for approving the hosting rights and supporting preparations for the national event.
He further described the conference as an opportunity for Nasarawa State to showcase ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure and strengthen partnerships with federal agencies and development organisations.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Ibrahim Alhassan, disclosed that committee members were selected from various ministries, departments, and agencies based on their professional experience and competence.
Responding on behalf of the committees, the Chief Medical Director of the State Hospital Management Board, Dr Egdego Egba, assured the ministry that members would work tirelessly to deliver a successful National Council on Health meeting in 2026.
