National News – Veteran British television presenter Judith Chalmers has died at the age of 90 after battling Alzheimer’s disease for several years.

Her family confirmed that the longtime broadcaster passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones after her health worsened in recent weeks.

Chalmers, best known for hosting the popular travel programme Wish You Were Here…?, became one of the most recognised faces on British television during a career that spanned more than six decades.

She reportedly died on Thursday night, while tributes continue to pour in from viewers, colleagues and broadcasting organisations across the United Kingdom.

Born in Gatley near Manchester, Chalmers began her broadcasting career at just 13 years old on BBC radio’s Children’s Hour.

She later moved into television and became one of the early presenters on children’s programmes before building a successful career with both the BBC and ITV.

Her biggest breakthrough came in 1974 when she started presenting Wish You Were Here…?, a travel show that introduced millions of viewers to holiday destinations around the world.

She remained the face of the programme until 2003, helping shape travel television in Britain through her engaging style and on-screen warmth.

Beyond travel broadcasting, Chalmers also presented shows including Come Dancing, Good Afternoon, and BBC Radio 2 programmes.

In 1994, she was honoured with an OBE for her contributions to broadcasting and entertainment.

ITV described Chalmers as a “national treasure” whose influence on television would not be forgotten.

Her family said she leaves behind “a giant suitcase of the happiest memories.”

Chalmers was married to sports presenter Neil Durden-Smith and had two sons, including television presenter Mark Durden-Smith.
