Police Arrest FUTO Students Over Killing

National News – The Imo State Police Command has arrested three students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), over the alleged murder of a 21-year-old Cyber Security undergraduate, Chinedu Christogonus, who was beaten to death after being accused of stealing N13,500.

The incident occurred on Saturday at FUTO campus in Owerri, Imo State, when members of the Man O’ War organisation allegedly assaulted the 100-level student after accusing him of theft of N13,500.

According to police spokesperson Henry Okoye, the suspects identified as Chukwuemeka Benedict (21), Kelechi Ikenna (24), and Obioma Anastasia (21), all 500-level students, were arrested following swift response ordered by Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso.

Investigations revealed that the victim was restrained, severely beaten, and rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

The brutal killing sparked unrest on campus, leading to protests and destruction of property as students reacted to the death.

The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough probe, while police assure that all those involved will be brought to justice, emphasizing rule of law and accountability.

Police further stated that relevant evidence has been secured and the corpse deposited in the morgue for autopsy to determine exact cause of death.

The Imo State Police Command urged students and residents to remain calm, assuring that a discreet investigation is ongoing to uncover all perpetrators.

It also emphasized that no individual, regardless of status, will be shielded from the law if found culpable in the tragic incident.

Weeks after the incident, the university community continues to mourn the loss of the young student, as calls for stricter campus security measures grow.

Authorities say further updates will be communicated as investigations progress at the SCID level.

Community leaders have also urged against jungle justice and misinformation, stressing the need for lawful prosecution and protection of student rights within tertiary institutions across Imo State.
