National News – The Labour Party has announced the member representing Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency, Jonathan Gaza, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 Nasarawa State election.
The declaration was made during the party’s special nomination congress held in Lafia, the state capital, on Saturday.
The decision positions Gaza as the party’s flag bearer ahead of what is expected to be a keenly contested governorship race.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Primary Elections Committee and Returning Officer, Dr. Kalu Ekeh.
He stated that Gaza emerged in line with the Labour Party constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and the party’s electoral guidelines.
According to Ekeh, the lawmaker secured the backing of delegates and fulfilled all constitutional and procedural requirements needed to contest the governorship election.
The party also affirmed former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, as its candidate for both the Nasarawa North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026, and the 2027 senatorial election.
Maku was declared winner after contesting unopposed and meeting all requirements set by the party.
The senatorial by-election became necessary following the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who previously represented the district.
Labour Party officials expressed confidence that Maku would perform strongly in the upcoming poll.
Speaking after receiving the party’s mandate, Gaza promised to provide transformative leadership if elected governor in 2027.
He said his ambition represents a social contract with the people of Nasarawa State and pledged to harness the state’s human and natural resources for sustainable development.
He further urged supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns and vote for Labour Party candidates in future elections.
According to him, collective efforts and responsible leadership would help place the state on a path of growth and prosperity.
Party officials also presented certificates of return to candidates seeking Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly seats across Nasarawa State’s three senatorial districts and 13 local government areas.
