National News – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, a prisoner of conscience and called for his immediate release, alleging that he is being subjected to political persecution.

The resolution was reached during the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Saturday as leaders reviewed key political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a communiqué signed by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party unanimously resolved that El-Rufai’s situation represents political victimisation.

The declaration is expected to intensify national political discussions, especially as El-Rufai remains a prominent figure within opposition circles preparing for the next electoral cycle.

During the meeting, the NEC also ratified the outcomes of recently conducted primary elections for State Houses of Assembly, National Assembly, governorship, and presidential positions.

However, the approval excluded contests with pending appeals as of May 29, 2026, as well as primaries yet to be concluded.

The party stated that the decision was necessary to maintain transparency and internal democracy while ensuring disputes arising from the nomination process are handled through established mechanisms.

Party leaders stressed the importance of resolving all outstanding grievances fairly before finalising the affected contests.

As part of broader organisational reforms, the NEC approved a 12-month extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC).

The move is aimed at ensuring leadership continuity as the party strengthens its structures and expands its national presence ahead of the 2027 elections.

The committee also approved the establishment of caretaker committees at zonal, state, local government, and ward levels for one year.

ADC leaders said the measure would enhance grassroots mobilisation and improve party coordination nationwide.

Earlier, National Chairman David Mark urged members to remain united and focused on presenting the ADC as a credible alternative for Nigerians seeking solutions to the country’s economic and security challenges.

The party believes its latest decisions will position it strongly for future electoral contests.
