National News – Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has defected from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, declaring her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made on Wednesday via her social media platform, where she cited a renewed understanding of Nigeria’s political future as the driving force behind her move.

Yesufu explained that her decision aligns with the leadership direction of Peter Obi, whom she described as embodying the hope for a functional Nigeria.

According to her, she initially joined the ADC in support of Obi’s political ideology but has now chosen to continue that commitment within the NDC.

She stressed that her loyalty remains tied to her promise to support reforms and credible leadership.

The activist also confirmed that her move to the NDC is not merely symbolic but strategic, as she plans to run for the FCT senatorial seat under the party’s platform.

She noted that her transition from the ADC was handled responsibly, ensuring all obligations were completed before her departure.

Yesufu expressed appreciation to party members, highlighting her roles in various committees and describing the experience as valuable to her political journey.

Her defection comes amid a broader political realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

Recently, key figures including Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso also moved to the NDC, triggering a wave of defections and reshaping alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

Analysts say these shifts could significantly influence voter dynamics in the FCT and beyond.

Observers believe Yesufu’s candidacy could energise youth participation and reform-focused voters, particularly in Abuja, where political competition is expected to intensify.

Her activism background and strong online presence may play a crucial role in shaping campaign narratives in the coming months.
