National News – Nigerian domestic airlines are facing growing financial pressure following a sharp increase in the price of Jet-A1 aviation fuel across the country.

Industry stakeholders revealed that the price of aviation fuel has risen dramatically from about ₦1,000 per litre two weeks ago to nearly ₦1,800 per litre in several locations, representing an increase of roughly 80 percent within a short period.

Aviation fuel remains the single largest operational cost for airlines, accounting for about 30 to 35 percent of their total expenses.

The sudden surge is therefore placing many local carriers under significant financial strain. Airline operators say the rising cost is already affecting their profitability and could eventually impact ticket prices if the trend continues.

According to the spokesperson for the Airline Operators of Nigeria, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, the sudden increase has forced airlines to temporarily absorb the financial burden in order to avoid placing additional pressure on Nigerian travellers already facing economic challenges.

He explained that most airlines are currently selling tickets at prices that barely cover operational costs, adding that many carriers are operating at a loss.

While airlines are trying to maintain stable fares for passengers, the situation may become unsustainable if aviation fuel prices continue to climb.

Industry analysts attribute the spike largely to tensions and conflict in the Middle East, which have pushed global crude oil prices higher.

Since Jet-A1 fuel is directly linked to international oil market trends, fluctuations in global energy supply can significantly affect local aviation costs.

Okonkwo also noted that Nigeria’s emerging local refining capacity could offer a long-term solution.

With the Dangote Refinery now operating, airline operators hope that increased domestic production of aviation fuel could stabilise supply and reduce price volatility.

He urged the Federal Government to engage stakeholders in the aviation sector and explore ways to ensure consistent fuel availability for local carriers.

According to him, improved domestic production and strategic policy support could help reduce operational challenges for airlines.

If the current situation persists, aviation experts warn that airlines may eventually have no choice but to adjust ticket prices to survive.
