National News – The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has criticised the strike action declared by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), insisting that the move did not follow proper procedures.

Despite the lecturers’ directive to withdraw services over salary-related grievances, the university has maintained that ongoing examinations will continue as scheduled to avoid disrupting the academic calendar.

The UNILAG chapter of ASUU announced the industrial action after a congress held on Tuesday, citing what it described as “amputated” salaries for January and February.

According to the union chairman, Prof. Idou Keinde, lecturers received incomplete salary payments, excluding key components such as the Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics, the Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowance, and the Professorial Allowance.

Keinde stated that lecturers would suspend academic duties until the outstanding payments are fully settled.

The union argued that the partial salary payments had created financial strain for many academic staff members and demanded immediate intervention from the relevant authorities.

However, UNILAG management, through the Head of the Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the declaration of the strike did not follow the required procedures.

The university noted that discussions with the ASUU executive were already ongoing to resolve concerns regarding unpaid academic allowances.

According to the university’s statement, management remains committed to addressing staff welfare issues while ensuring that academic activities continue smoothly.

The institution emphasised that halting examinations at this stage of the semester would negatively affect students, particularly those preparing for industrial training placements, internships, and admission to the Nigerian Law School.

The university confirmed that examinations already scheduled for the week will proceed as planned.

It added that only courses for which students have been officially notified by their Deans or Heads of Department will have their examinations postponed and rescheduled.

UNILAG management further appealed to members of the university community to remain calm and continue their lawful academic activities while negotiations with ASUU continue.

The institution expressed optimism that dialogue would lead to a peaceful resolution of the salary dispute and prevent prolonged disruption to the academic session.
