Oyo APC Crisis Deepens Over Zoning Dispute

The protesters - National News

National News – Tension is building within the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State as party members from Akinyele staged a protest in Ibadan on Tuesday, demanding strict adherence to a long-standing zoning agreement ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives election.

The protesters, numbering in dozens, gathered at the party secretariat to oppose what they described as a planned imposition of a candidate from Lagelu Local Government.

According to group representatives Abdul-Akeem Mosafejo, Fausat Ajibade, and Taofeek Kasali, the constituency has operated a rotation system since 1999, alternating representation between Akinyele and Lagelu every four years.

They insist that 2027 should produce a candidate from Akinyele.

Their concern is rooted in reports that the current arrangement may be ignored, potentially allowing a Lagelu-based incumbent to retain the seat.

The protesters warned that abandoning the zoning formula could trigger internal divisions and reduce voter confidence at the grassroots level.

Local reactions in Ibadan suggest the dispute is already stirring political anxiety.

Some party loyalists fear that unresolved disagreements could open the door for opposition parties to capitalise on APC’s internal cracks, especially in a politically competitive state like Oyo.

Others argue that zoning agreements, while informal, are critical tools for balancing power and maintaining unity in Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.

Responding to the protest, APC State Publicity Secretary Olawale Sadare urged calm, assuring members that party leaders would review the grievances.

However, analysts say such assurances may not be enough without a clear and transparent decision.

The situation highlights a broader issue within Nigerian politics—how internal democracy is managed within parties.

If not carefully handled, this dispute could weaken APC’s electoral chances in the constituency and set a precedent for similar conflicts nationwide.
