National News – Outrage has continued to spread across Nigeria following the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where a kidnapped teacher was reportedly beheaded by suspected bandits.

The attack happened on Friday, May 16, 2026, when armed men stormed three schools in Ogbomoso axis, killing two persons and abducting about 30 pupils and staff members.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, confirmed that seven students were kidnapped from Community Secondary School, while 18 children and seven teachers were abducted from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School.

The murdered teacher was identified as Michael Oyedokun, a mathematics teacher.

President Bola Tinubu condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric and heartbreaking.

He assured Nigerians that security agencies were carrying out a technology-driven rescue operation led by the Inspector General of Police.

Tinubu also renewed calls for the establishment of state police to strengthen local security operations.

The police confirmed the arrest of six suspected informants linked to the kidnappers.

Investigators reportedly tracked phone conversations between the suspects and the abductors, who allegedly used forest routes around the Oyo-Kwara border to hide their victims.

Teachers in the affected communities staged peaceful protests on Monday, demanding the immediate rescue of their colleagues and students.

Several schools in the area were deserted as fear spread among parents and residents.

Traditional rulers, religious leaders and civil groups, including the Christian Association of Nigeria, condemned the attack and urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts against kidnapping and banditry in the South-West.

Makinde also revealed that surveillance aircraft purchased by the Oyo State Government would become operational before the end of June to improve border monitoring and security operations.
