National News – Former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon has urged the country’s political class to abandon “do-or-die politics” and embrace free, fair, and transparent elections to preserve national unity.

Gowon made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja during the launch of his 859-page autobiography titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance.

The 91-year-old elder statesman said politicians must stop creating unnecessary tension through desperate political struggles and flawed intra-party elections.

He stressed that despite Nigeria’s current challenges, the country would not collapse because of its resilience and strength developed over decades.

Gowon, who ruled Nigeria between 1966 and 1975, reflected on the nation’s turbulent history, including the Civil War fought from 1967 to 1970.

According to him, Nigeria survived one of its darkest periods under his leadership and still possesses the capacity to emerge stronger.

He also criticised leaders for complicating simple national problems with confusing solutions that often create further division and instability.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan praised Gowon’s leadership style, especially his famous “no victor, no vanquished” declaration after the Civil War.

Jonathan said the decision helped Nigeria begin healing, reconciliation, and reconstruction after years of bloodshed.

He added that Gowon’s autobiography provides younger generations with valuable insight into leadership, peacebuilding, and national unity during difficult periods in Nigeria’s history.

Jonathan also commended Gowon for establishing the National Youth Service Corps, describing the programme as one of Nigeria’s most impactful unity initiatives.

He recalled how NYSC members contributed to his education in secondary school by teaching key science subjects in rural communities.

At the ceremony, retired Defence Minister Theophilus Danjuma donated N3bn toward the project, while Aliko Dangote donated N500m.

Several dignitaries, military officers, religious leaders, and politicians attended the Abuja event.
