National News – The United Kingdom is preparing to record its hottest May day ever as temperatures are expected to hit 35 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The British weather agency, the Met Office, said the extreme heatwave could surpass the previous May temperature record of 32.8C set in 1922 and matched again in 1944.
The unusual weather conditions have sparked fresh concerns about climate change and rising global temperatures across the country.
Meteorologists disclosed that the heatwave spread across southeast England and London over the weekend, making Monday likely to become the hottest bank holiday in UK history.
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan explained that temperatures above 35C are rare even during peak summer periods, making the current weather pattern historic for May.
Residents across Britain reacted to the scorching conditions as temperatures climbed beyond 30C on Sunday.
Andrea Quaine, a London resident and mother, said the intense heat was alarming and reflected the growing impact of global warming.
A young tourist from Manchester, Liza Nizari, also described the weather as extremely hot while visiting the capital city.
Climate experts warned that human activities linked to greenhouse gas emissions are increasing the frequency and severity of heatwaves, floods, and droughts worldwide.
Scientists believe climate change is pushing global temperatures higher and causing weather records to be broken more often in several countries, including the UK.
The UK recorded its hottest year in 2025, according to climate data released by authorities.
Last week, climate advisers urged the British government to strengthen infrastructure and prepare schools, hospitals, and public facilities for worsening heat conditions in the future.
Environmental experts say the latest UK heatwave highlights the urgent need for stronger climate action and clean energy policies to reduce emissions and protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather events.
