National News – Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has confirmed that 28 people were killed in a brutal attack by gunmen in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

The governor, who personally visited the affected community and victims, described the assault as “tragic” and “senseless,” promising that the perpetrators would face justice.

Speaking in a state broadcast on Tuesday, Governor Mutfwang said the attack occurred around 7:30 pm and targeted law-abiding residents during their normal activities.

“We share deeply in the grief of the bereaved families and pray for strength, comfort, and grace for all affected,” he added.

In response, the state imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North from midnight on March 29 to April 1, allowing security forces to restore order and prevent further escalation.

The governor also visited injured victims at Jos University Teaching Hospital and assured that the state government would cover all medical expenses.

Families of the deceased will receive government support, and dignified burials are planned.

Security agencies have already apprehended a suspect linked to the attack, and authorities are determined to prosecute all involved to the full extent of the law.

Mutfwang praised the residents for showing restraint and urged citizens to report suspicious activities.

In a bid to strengthen security, he directed strict enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles (Okada) within the Jos Greater Master Plan.

A State Security Council meeting has been convened to reinforce the security architecture and prevent future attacks.

“Plateau shall remain united, resilient, and committed to peace,” the governor stated, emphasizing collective responsibility in safeguarding lives and property.

He called on community leaders, youth, and religious groups to partner with the government in promoting tolerance, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence.
