National News – The Nigerian Senate has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to carry out a thorough investigation into the recent violent attacks in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, which left at least 28 people dead.
Lawmakers demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators while resolving to send a high-powered delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to console victims and residents affected by the tragedy.
The resolution followed a motion by Senators Diket Plang (Plateau Central) and Dachung Mwadkon (Plateau North), highlighting a worsening security situation in Kanam and Jos North Local Government Areas.
Plang noted that Plateau, once dubbed the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” has seen renewed violence, including attacks in Kanam earlier this month and the Palm Sunday assault in Anguwan Rukuba.
Coordinated strikes targeting civilians in populated areas have raised fears of escalating insecurity.
A separate ambush in Garga, Kanam, left several security personnel dead.
Senator Simon Lalong (Plateau South) recalled similar violent incidents during his tenure as governor, emphasizing the need for enhanced security.
Lawmakers warned that ongoing violence threatens agricultural activities, displaces communities, and risks food insecurity.
They urged proactive security measures such as permanent operational bases in high-risk areas, improved intelligence gathering, and aerial surveillance to dismantle criminal hideouts.
The Senate also called for increased recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force and military to address personnel shortages, noting that current numbers fall below the UN-recommended ratio of one policeman per 650 citizens.
A minute of silence was observed for the victims, and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs was urged to provide relief materials, including food, medical supplies, and temporary shelters for displaced residents.
The Senate’s intervention underscores the urgent need to restore peace in Plateau State, hold attackers accountable, and protect the lives and properties of citizens amid rising insecurity.
