National News – The Federal Government has fixed June 17, 2026, for the nationwide rollout of Nigeria’s long-awaited Digital Switch Over project aimed at replacing analogue television broadcasting with digital transmission.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a visit to the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
Idris said the digital broadcasting rollout would improve television viewing, expand access to channels, and create better advertising opportunities across Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.
He explained that the project, delayed for several years, is now ready for official commissioning after collaboration between NigComSat, the National Broadcasting Commission, and relevant government ministries.
According to the minister, the digital switch over will help broadcasters and advertisers measure audience engagement more accurately.
He noted that the new technology would reveal viewing patterns across different demographics, helping advertisers make informed decisions on television campaigns and programme sponsorships.
The government also promised Nigerians clearer television signals and free digital broadcasting services.
Idris explained that unlike earlier DSO phases where encrypted set-top boxes increased costs, the current system would be more affordable because the government had absorbed part of the expenses.
The Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, Jane Egerton-Idehen, said the agency plans to launch two additional satellites to strengthen nationwide service coverage and improve broadcasting operations.
Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu, disclosed that the platform would launch with about 100 television channels.
He added that regional studios had been established across the country to support local content creators and reduce pressure on Lagos and Abuja production hubs.
The Federal Government said the digital switch over initiative is expected to boost competition in broadcasting, encourage local content development, and improve television accessibility nationwide.
