National News – A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Gwale Constituency, Abdulmajid Mai Rigar Fata, has defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress after failing to secure the APC ticket for re-election ahead of the 2027 polls.

The lawmaker, who represents Gwale Local Government Area in Kano State, officially joined the NDC on Thursday during a meeting with former Kano State governor and party leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Maitama, Abuja.

The development was disclosed by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, through a Facebook post announcing the defection.

According to Hassan, Mai Rigar Fata moved to the NDC alongside former Gwale Local Government Vice Chairman, Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, and Mahadi Isa Umar.

The politician was first elected into the Kano State House of Assembly in 2023 under the New Nigeria Peoples Party before later aligning with the APC alongside Governor Abba Yusuf.

Reports indicated that the lawmaker’s latest political move followed his inability to obtain the APC return ticket for the next election cycle.

Political observers believe the development could signal growing unrest within the ruling party as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.

The defection came shortly after a Federal High Court ruling reportedly cleared legal obstacles preventing politicians from moving to alternative political platforms before elections.

Reacting to the judgment, the African Democratic Congress said the decision would encourage freedom of association and possibly trigger more defections from the APC in the coming months.

The situation highlights increasing political realignments in Kano and across Nigeria as politicians seek stronger platforms to secure their ambitions before the next elections.

Analysts say more defections may occur as parties conclude their internal nomination processes.
