National News – Russian forces launched a massive overnight missile and drone assault on Kyiv, Ukraine, striking residential buildings and infrastructure in one of the largest attacks since the 2022 invasion.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that at least two people were killed and more than 40 injured, including children, after a nine-storey apartment block partially collapsed during the bombardment.
Emergency rescue teams worked through the rubble in search of survivors as dozens of residents were reportedly trapped inside destroyed apartments in the capital Kyiv.
Authorities said the strikes were part of a wider wave of over 670 drones and 56 missiles launched across Ukraine, affecting multiple regions including Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy and Kremenchuk.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported severe damage to residential blocks, disruption of water supply, and destruction of public facilities such as schools and clinics.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described the assault as a deliberate escalation following the expiration of a brief ceasefire, urging stronger international air defence support from allies.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha condemned the attack as “barbaric,” calling on global powers to pressure Moscow to end the war and halt continued civilian targeting.
Rescue operations continued into the morning as officials warned that more victims could still be trapped under collapsed concrete and debris.
The attack marks a renewed intensification of Russia’s campaign, with Ukraine reporting more than 1,500 drone strikes in just days after the ceasefire ended.
Analysts say the escalation highlights growing risks for urban centres as both sides prepare for continued prolonged conflict without immediate peace prospects.
Officials said the latest barrage came shortly after a temporary ceasefire expired, marking a rapid return to large-scale aerial warfare across Ukraine.
Air defence units were deployed across the capital as sirens sounded through the night, though several residential areas still sustained heavy damage.
International leaders have been urged to increase military and humanitarian support as Ukraine continues to face escalating attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Rescue efforts remain ongoing amid fears of further casualties.
