National News – South Korean football captain Son Heung-min will lead his country to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his fourth appearance at the global tournament.

The experienced forward, who now plays for Los Angeles FC in the United States, was named in coach Hong Myung-bo’s 26-man squad released ahead of the competition.

Son, who turns 34 in July, remains one of Asia’s most influential footballers and is expected to play a major role in South Korea’s campaign in Mexico.

The South Korea World Cup squad also includes several Europe-based stars such as Lee Kang-in of Paris Saint-Germain, defender Kim Min-jae of Bayern Munich, and forward Hwang Hee-chan of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The inclusion of experienced international players is aimed at strengthening South Korea’s chances of progressing beyond the group stage.

South Korea have been drawn in Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico, South Africa and the Czech Republic.

The Asian side will play all their first-round matches in Mexico, with their opening fixture scheduled for June 11 against the Czech Republic.

Football analysts believe the group presents both challenges and opportunities for the Korean team.

Other notable players selected include striker Oh Hyeon-gyu, midfielder Paik Seung-ho, and Celtic winger Yang Hyun-jun.

German-born defender Jens Castrop also earned a place in the final squad, adding more depth to the team ahead of the tournament.
