National News – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday held its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The exercise featured major contenders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

The nationwide direct primary was conducted across 8,809 wards in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Party officials said it was designed to strengthen internal democracy and widen participation in candidate selection.

Atiku voted at Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State. He described the process as a democratic step toward “recovering Nigeria and restoring prosperity.”

Amaechi voted in Ubima, Rivers State. He urged Nigerians to prioritise competence in leadership over ethnicity and religion.

In Borno State, Hayatu-Deen also participated in the exercise. He called on supporters to back a “new direction” for the party.

The ADC adopted the direct primary after efforts to reach a consensus candidate failed among its three presidential aspirants.

This led to a simultaneous voting process nationwide.

Voting took place across polling units under tight coordination to ensure peace and order. Party officials monitored the process in different states.

The outcome of the primary will determine the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

It is also expected to shape opposition politics and alliances ahead of the general elections.

Observers say the participation of high-profile figures like Atiku and Amaechi has increased national attention on the party.

The result is expected to influence Nigeria’s political landscape going into 2027.
