National News – The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the recent Palm Sunday killings in Jos, Plateau State, calling the attacks “gruesome and unacceptable.”

Several residents were reportedly killed, while others sustained injuries during the violent incident.

NBA President Afam Osigwe described the attacks as deeply tragic, especially as they occurred on a significant Christian observance, a day meant for prayer, reflection, and community.

The association urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent further loss of life.

The Plateau State Government, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed that 28 residents were killed in the Palm Sunday violence.

In response, a 48-hour curfew was imposed in Jos North, effective from March 29 to April 1, 2026.

The governor condemned the attacks as “barbaric and unprovoked” and assured citizens that security agencies are investigating to apprehend the perpetrators.

The NBA stressed that recurring violence without accountability fosters a culture of impunity, undermining public confidence in the government’s ability to protect lives.

“When perpetrators evade justice, it signals that human life is expendable, leaving communities in constant fear,” the statement said.

The association urged federal and state governments to enhance security in vulnerable areas and improve intelligence gathering and proactive responses to prevent further attacks.

Citing Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees the right to life, the NBA emphasized that protecting lives and property is the primary duty of government.

The association extended condolences to the families of victims and the people of Plateau State, stressing that all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or location, have an inviolable right to life and security.

The NBA’s statement comes amid growing national concerns over rising insecurity, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated action from law enforcement agencies.

Residents continue to call for stronger measures to prevent similar tragedies across Nigeria.
