National News – The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Osun State, Najeem Salaam, has condemned the killing of a teacher abducted during a bandit attack in Oyo State, insisting that the protection of Nigerians should take priority over political activities linked to the 2027 general elections.
Salaam reacted to the death of Mr Michael Oyedokun, a teacher kidnapped alongside students and staff members during an attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinle, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident happened on Friday when suspected bandits invaded Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School, abducting about 30 pupils, students, and teachers while killing two people.
The former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly described the killing as barbaric, heartbreaking, and a reflection of the worsening insecurity affecting communities across Nigeria.
According to him, teachers and innocent citizens have become easy targets for kidnappers and criminal gangs operating in different parts of the country.
Salaam said the rising insecurity in Nigeria has reached an alarming stage and called on the Federal Government and security agencies to act urgently.
He stressed that governance should focus on protecting lives, securing communities, and restoring public confidence in the nation’s security system rather than concentrating on political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also urged security agencies to intensify rescue efforts for the remaining abducted victims and deploy all necessary resources to ensure their safe release.
The ADC candidate noted that the tragic attack in Oyo State should serve as a wake-up call for leaders across Nigeria to treat insecurity as a national emergency requiring decisive and sincere action.
Salaam further sympathised with the family of the slain teacher, students, school staff, and residents affected by the attack, while calling for stronger security measures to prevent future school abductions and violent attacks in vulnerable communities.
