National News – Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in Abeokuta, called on All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants across the state’s 20 local government areas to embrace zoning and consensus ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting involved House of Representatives and State Assembly aspirants and party leaders.

He said the move aims to promote fairness, unity, and reduce post-primary crises.

He explained that while many aspirants are qualified, only one candidate can emerge per position, so local consultations and grassroots leaders will guide selection.

Abiodun emphasized that he is not imposing candidates but encouraging dialogue to avoid divisive primaries.

He warned that internal rivalry could weaken APC’s chances in the 2027 polls.

He also promised refund of nomination form fees to aspirants who do not secure tickets and assured possible appointments or compensation within government structures.

According to him, this incentive system is designed to retain loyal members and discourage anti-party activities while strengthening party cohesion.

Party elders including Kola Ogunjobi, Gbenga Kaka, and others commended the initiative, describing it as a practical approach to managing political competition and sustaining unity within APC in Ogun State.

The initiative highlights APC’s broader strategy in Ogun State to reduce costly and divisive primary elections by strengthening internal democracy through consensus building.

By prioritizing zoning across local governments, the party seeks to ensure equitable representation, prevent factional disputes, and enhance grassroots participation in candidate selection.

The refund of nomination fees and promise of appointments are positioned as incentives to maintain loyalty, manage political tensions, and support aspirants who step down in line with party decisions.

Analysts view the move as part of Governor Abiodun’s 2027 election preparation strategy aimed at consolidating support within the APC, improving party cohesion, and increasing electoral competitiveness across Ogun State’s constituencies.

The development reflects ongoing political negotiations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with emphasis on unity, inclusiveness, and strategic management of aspirant interests within the APC structure in Ogun State.
