National News – Former Ogun State governor and senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has revealed that his political team significantly contributed to Governor Dapo Abiodun’s election victories.

Speaking during his 70th birthday celebration in Sagamu, Ogun State, Daniel stated that without their strategic support, Abiodun might not have secured the governorship.

He emphasized that political dynamics within the Ogun PDP influenced his decision to back Abiodun’s ambitions.

Daniel recounted that his collaboration with political allies ensured Abiodun’s re-election, despite challenges from opposition candidate Ladi Adebutu of the Peoples Democratic Party.

He noted tensions with Abiodun during the governor’s second term, especially over perceived lack of support from lawmakers Daniel had helped elect.

“Without people like us and the grace of God, he probably wouldn’t have been governor,” he remarked.

Daniel also explained his departure from the PDP, saying it was based on ideological conviction and not personal ambition.

He highlighted his longstanding affiliation with progressive political movements, including AD-Afenifere, and stressed that his decisions were aimed at fostering Ogun State’s rapid development.

Key achievements of his administration, he said, included investments in infrastructure, agriculture, education, and sports, inspired by the democratic socialist principles of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

On governance, Daniel advocated for inclusive policies prioritizing public interest over personal gain.

He called for mature leadership in Ogun, stressing that economic considerations should guide major projects.

He also supported the introduction of state and community police to address Nigeria’s growing security challenges, noting the need for decentralization in policing.

Daniel praised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, calling it inevitable for national progress.

Reflecting on his political journey, Daniel expressed gratitude to God despite personal losses and political challenges.

He urged leaders to prioritize accountability, service, and the collective good over ego, highlighting that his life’s work aimed to reposition Ogun State for sustainable growth and development.
