National News – President Bola Tinubu has visited Plateau State to console families affected by the Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, which claimed 28 lives.
During the visit, Tinubu announced the immediate deployment of over 5,000 AI-enabled surveillance cameras across the state to help security agencies identify and apprehend perpetrators.
He also ordered the reinforcement of security with 850 additional soldiers.
At a town hall meeting with political and traditional leaders at Yakubu Gowon Airport, Heipang, near Jos, Tinubu acknowledged the grief of victims, particularly Mrs. Rhoda, whose son Ayuba was killed in the attack.
The President pledged government support, promising compensation through a newly constituted committee to assess losses.
He directed security chiefs, including the Inspector-General of Police, Chief of Defence Staff, and Minister of Defence, to bring the attackers to justice.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang briefed the President on the state’s security situation, noting ongoing efforts to restore peace.
He announced stricter enforcement of the commercial motorcycle ban and pledged to modernize local transport systems.
The Army confirmed the deployment of 850 reinforcements drawn from Abuja and Kaduna to protect residents and restore law and order.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, revealed plans to deploy a network of AI surveillance cameras, starting with Jos.
He highlighted personal experiences with past violence in Jos in 2001, underscoring his commitment to the project.
Former Governor Jonah Jang and APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda praised the visit, calling for sustained federal intervention and proactive measures, including local recruitment for forest guards.
Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticized the response, claiming the visit failed to reach grieving communities and reflected a disconnect between leadership and citizens.
The attack, believed to be politically motivated with elements of land disputes, has raised concerns about recurring violence in Plateau State.
Tinubu’s visit aims to restore peace, strengthen security, and provide relief to affected families, emphasizing development and unity over violence.
